June 20, 2024Empathy & Perspective-Taking
June 25, 2024“When resilience turns to tolerance, that’s when you’ve crossed over to selflessness.”
Although traditional, cultural, societal, religious, spiritual, and even, psychology teachings advocate tolerance, especially in interactions and relationships; Theory of Self-Relativity considers tolerance, and especially long-term and chronic-tolerance to be detrimental for the Self. Excessive resilience, which often turns to tolerance, and even sacrifice, is a reflection of a person completely giving up self-love and self-worth for others. By taking advantage of human empathy, as well as via shame and guilt feelings; through manmade stories and doctrines, tolerance and sacrifice are incorrectly and manipulatively portrayed as moral human attributes.
The boiling-frog-syndrome is a good example of how chronic negative-resilience often turns into tolerance. This example is based on the premise that if a frog is suddenly put in boiling water, the frog will jump out; however, if the frog is put in a room temperature water and the water temperature is slowly brought up to a boil, the frog will not recognize or perceive the danger, and will eventually boil to death. This example clearly indicates how chronic negative-resilience leads to tolerance, and how tolerance could have severe consequences in imbalanced relationships.
