Gratitude just like forgiveness is self-serving and limiting.

Gratitude especially when deployed in the wrong circumstances is often intended to be a comforting mechanism to justify a negativity and/or to abstain from facing to improve the negativity. For example, being thankful that you have your health when you just lost your job is such a form of gratitude and just like forgiveness it’s intended to make the grateful person feel better in lieu of something difficult that requires difficult decision and action.
Being appreciative is different than being grateful because truly improving people wouldn’t have time to continuously stop and pay gratitude for their accomplishments. Those who are not improving are more prone to excessive-gratitude because it helps them justify their inability or lack of willingness to improve.
Excessive-gratitude prevents improvement because it incorrectly creates a sense of contentment and accomplishment.
