May 10, 2024“Micromanagement projects insecurity.”
Be it on a personal level or as a collective for a team or an organization, attention to detail is important to properly construct and move a goal forward. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the steps required to get to the goal are properly identified and executed. For example, to build a building, we must identify the path of how we are going to reach the final result, and we must build it from the ground up. Same applies to other aspects of our life. Therefore, giving instructions and guidance is different than micromanagement.
However, micromanagement, be it on a personal and subjective level, or as a group, can become unproductive because it takes efficiency away and it prevents proper delegation of duties. Micromanagement is often as a result of uncertainty and insecurity, and at its core, it is intended to be controlling. This control could be as a result of uncertainty and anxiety of an individual or an entity; or as it often is, it is a byproduct of perfectionism.
To minimize micromanagement, we must create more certainty by taking proper steps, by trusting and by delegating responsibilities where indicated, and by allowing the process to move forward.
