Self-deception is one of the main causes of failure, and emotional-thinking is at the heart of it; hence the reason why we are continuously chasing empty-motivation and cannot cross over to the action part.
We fool ourselves by thinking thoughts and believing in things that make us feel good but have no actual and especially long-term additive results. We do so because it is easier to believe positively to feel good than to take action to change our circumstances positively.
This is why critical-thinking and understanding are important in learning how to take personal-responsibility to actually make change happen.
